Moving to Maryland? How to Find the Right School Mid-Year

Moving to Maryland with a child means making a lot of decisions at once: finding a home, settling into a new routine, and choosing the right school. If you are arriving after the school year has started, you may be concerned about finding a school without waiting until the next school year

At Julia Brown Schools, we offer rolling admission, which means you can apply throughout the school year. If space is available in your child's program, they can join us mid-year. If the program is full, we will add your child to our waitlist.

For families relocating to Montgomery or Howard County, including military families making a permanent change of station (PCS) move to Fort Meade, Julia Brown Schools offers four Maryland campuses in Olney, Silver Spring, Columbia, and Laurel, providing authentic Montessori education for children ages 15 months through 9 years.

4 Things to Consider When Choosing a School After Moving

1. Find a Program That Fits Your Child's Age

Start by narrowing your search to schools that serve your child's age group. Julia Brown Schools offers programs from Toddler through Elementary, serving children ages 15 months through 9 years.

Whether your child is entering their first classroom or continuing school after a move, consider the learning environment, classroom routines, and opportunities for continued growth.

Children do not need previous Montessori experience to join our programs.

2. Look for a Welcoming Classroom Environment

A move can mean leaving behind familiar teachers, friends, and routines. Touring a school gives you a chance to see how staff interact with children and how students engage with their environment.

In a Montessori classroom, children work with hands-on materials, develop independence, and learn through purposeful activities guided by their Directress. At Julia Brown Schools, our caring staff help new students adjust to their new classroom and routines.

3. Ask About Mid-Year Availability

Before scheduling tours, ask whether a school has openings for your child's age group, what the application process involves, and when your child could start.

At Julia Brown Schools, applications are accepted throughout the school year on a first-come, first-served basis. Once your application and registration fee have been submitted, an Administrator will reach out with the next steps.

If your child's program is full, we will add them to our waitlist so they can be considered when a space becomes available. Because our Toddler and Primary classrooms serve mixed-age groups, transitions between programs can create opportunities for mid-year enrollment.

4. Visit Before Making a Decision

A website can tell you about a school's programs, but a classroom visit helps you understand what your child's day might look like. During a tour, you can observe the classroom environment, see how staff interact with students, and get a feel for whether the school is a good fit for your family.

We recommend touring Julia Brown Schools before applying, but we understand that visiting in person isn't always practical when relocating from out of state. A tour is not required to submit an application.
